Anthony (Tony) Archino has taught the craft of traditional wooden boat building to folks of all ages for the past 15 years, and is currently the Executive Director of Islesford Boatworks, a small summertime community boat building program, based on a tiny island called Little Cranberry, located 4 miles off the coast of Maine. He moved to Travelers Rest, SC in 2015 with his wife Sarah, a Furman Professor, and two kids Hank and Sadie. Recently, he started a new company out of his South Carolina home, Birdhouse Boats, which specializes in featherlight canoes, kayaks and rowboats, perfect for the lakes and rivers of our area. Using traditional and modern techniques together, combined with old growth “sinker” cypress known for its amazing light weight, strength and extreme marine durability, he creates custom “skin on frame” boats that weigh as little as 8 pounds! All Birdhouse boats are built one at a time, custom made to suit.
Tony still spends his summers teaching up in Maine, but you can find him the rest of the year at his home in Travelers Rest, and he welcomes you to visit the shop. You can contact him through facebook, instagram or our website: birdhouseboats.com
